About

Vale Canada Inc. is a nickel mining and refining company which owns and operates four hydraulic plants on the Spanish River and one plant on the Vermilion River in the Sudbury area. The rivers were created about 11,000 years ago during the recession of the Wisconsin Glacial Period with generation development occurring between 1906 and 1929, in a combination of 25 cycle and 60 cycle machines. The combined watersheds drain an area of approximately 12,400 square kilometres, the upper reach being the divide to the Arctic watershed and emptying southward into Lake Huron. The generation plants are embedded in a privately owned distribution system and are used to offset energy requirements drawn from the provincial grid.
